Welcome to the Mercyhurst University Health Insurance page. This page provides all of the tools you need to manage your student health insurance plan. From here, you can enroll in your school’s plan, review the details of your plan, or simply educate yourself on the basics of health insurance. 

Mercyhurst Insurance Policy

Enrollment

All international students (both undergraduate and graduate) and student athlete undergraduates must show proof of coverage under another qualified plan in order to opt out of the Mercyhurst University sponsored Health Insurance Plan. Any traditional or nontraditional student of Mercyhurst University and their dependents may enroll in the Student Health Plan on a voluntary basis. Payment of the premium must accompany the enrollment form at the time of submission.

Enrollment Deadlines

All waiver forms and accompanying documentation must be submitted no later than July 15, 2018. 

Late enrollments/waivers with an effective date of August 1, 2018, will be accepted until August 30, 2018.

Refund Policy

No refunds for premiums will be authorized without confirmation from the university of a student’s termination and/or withdrawal from full-time status.

Athletes must maintain insurance coverage for a full 12 months, or they will not be eligible to play or practice.

Termination of insurance is the first of the month following receipt of notification from the university on a student’s withdrawal from classes.                   

Qualifying Event

If at any time a student comes of age and is no longer eligible to be insured as a dependent under their parent's plan, they may enroll in the Mercyhurst University Student Health Plan. The student must enroll within 30 days of a qualifying event. Other qualifying events include: loss of coverage, marriage, divorce, birth of a child, etc. Documentation of the qualifying event must be provided.

FAQs

Why is the cost of the Mercyhurst student health insurance plan for 2018-2019 higher than last year?

The student health insurance plan for 2018-2019 is 4.5% higher in cost than last year. This is the first time in two years that the price of the plan was raised. Currently, most health insurance plans in the United States have increased their costs at an even higher rate given changes in the health care industry. The rate for student health insurance is $984 per semester. The fall semester coverages are August 1 to January 31 and the spring semester coverages are February 1 to July 31 each year. 

Will the student receive a health insurance card?

Yes, a student on the Mercyhurst Student Health Insurance Plan will receive an insurance card that proves that they are covered by this plan. Students should take this card with them anytime that they go off campus for health care including if they see a doctor in the community, go for lab tests, or to the hospital. Students will not receive a new insurance card every year. Once you have received a card, please keep it from year to year. If you lose your insurance card, you can request a new one from Highmark using their online insurance website.

Does health insurance cover 100% of the costs for the medical care?

No, health insurance does not cover every medical care cost, but it does cover the majority of costs.  Without it, students and parents would pay 100% of medical care costs, which could be very expensive. It is very important for parents and students to set aside and save some dollars to cover their portion of medical expenses should the student become ill and need testing or care in the community.

Will the student need the health insurance card to receive care at the Cohen Student Health Center on campus?

No, health care received at the Cohen Student Health Center on campus is provided to the student for free and insurance is not billed. This allows students who are not feeling well due to colds, flus, and minor illnesses and injuries, to simply go to the Health Center for treatment. However, if the student needs lab tests, X-rays, prescription medications, specialist doctor care, or hospital services, the Health Center will refer the student to those services in the community.  The student will need their health insurance card for those community services.

What is the difference between a deductible and a co-pay?

A deductible is the amount of money at the start of the insurance plan year (August 1) that the student is responsible for paying on their own before the health insurance company will start to share the costs. Once the student has paid bills that add up to $500 (or $1,000 if on the family plan), Highmark will begin to pick up most of the additional costs during that year. At the start of each new plan year, the student will again have a deductible to satisfy.

A co-pay is what the student will owe for each visit to a community health provider even after they have met their deductible. This amount varies depending on the kind of doctor or medical service in the community that the student needs. A student could end up owing $20, $40, or more at the time of the visit.

Opt-Out Instructions

To opt out of the University Sponsored Health Plan, click here to go to the Hubbard Bert website. You will need to enter your student ID (seven numeric digits beginning with “0”) and date of birth. Click “Continue” to proceed and follow the opt-out directions. Be sure to complete all of the pages; you will get a confirmation number when completed.
