Graduation FAQs

When is the graduation?

The commencement exercises for graduate and undergraduate candidates will be held on Sunday, May 12th, 2019, at 2 p.m., at the Erie Insurance Arena.

What is the time and location of graduation mass?

Graduation mass is being held Sunday, May 12th, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. in Christ the King Chapel.

Are tickets required for graduation?

No. Guests are seated on a first come, first served basis.

When can I pick-up my cap and gown? 

Students will receive an email (to their Mercyhurst email)  indicating when their cap and gown is ready for pick up. Place gown on a hanger immediately; if after several days there are still wrinkles, press it with a cool iron.

What about parking?

Parking is available at the Erie Insurance Arena Ramp on East 8th Street between French and Holland Streets. (parking fee is $5, cash only). Handicap parking is available on the north side of the Arena.

Is handicap seating available?

Handicap seating is available for families attending commencement at the Erie Insurance Arena. Once inside someone will direct you to the handicapped seating area. Handicap parking is available in the northwest lot of the Arena. Questions regarding handicap accommodations may be addressed to Paul Joslin at

What time do the doors open for guests to be seated?

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

What time do the graduates arrive for line-up?

The graduates must arrive by 1 p.m. for line-up and assistance with academic attire.

What can I bring inside the Erie Insurance Arena?

  • All patrons are subject to security screening asa condition of admission.
  • Bags & purses are subject to an additional screening slowing the entry process. Bring only essential items.
  • Bottles, cans, flasks, noise makers, selfie sticks, weapons of any kind, dangerous and unlawful materials are prohibited.
  • Outside food and beverage is prohibited.
  • Additional items may be prohibited as requested by teams, leagues, promoters or artists.


    Mercyhurst University students who would like to announce their graduation through their hometown newspapers can do so by completing an online template, printing it and sending directly to the newspaper(s) in your area. You can also download the template and send in an e-mail.

    If you have questions about submitting your press release, call your local newspaper and ask for the News Desk to obtain the name of the person who handles college graduation announcements.

    Photos and Video

    GradImages true photographer will take your picture as you exit the stage with your diploma.

    Within about a week after graduation, you will receive a proof and a price list. You are under no obligation to purchase these photos; however, the GradImages photographer will be given access to the floor to capture each graduate for the families.

    You can pre-register your e-mail address and GradImages will notify you when your photos are available for online viewing and ordering. Visit the Pre-Event Registration page and follow the directions.

    Mercyhurst University has contracted with a professional videographer to capture your commencement on DVD. The two-hour DVD will feature the graduates receiving their diploma and the main speeches and awards.

    The cost of the DVD is $40, which includes shipping and handling. All orders must be pre-paid and received by June 30, 2019.

    Mercyhurst University has Commencement Flowers, a specialty flower company, provide Bouquets of Roses and Commemorative Graduation T-Shirts available for sale at the Erie Insurance Arena.  If families choose to purchase Flowers and Graduation T-Shirts for their graduate, they will be available in the lobby of the center for presentation after the ceremonies.

    Mercyhurst University Service Honor Society

    The Mercyhurst University Service Honor Society was established to honor graduating seniors who have exemplified the University's mission-centered commitment to "Service to Others" through a demonstration of:

    * Significant and sustained service to the Mercyhurst University community and/or meaningful and mission-inspired service to the local community and/or larger world.

    * Marked achievement in leadership

    * Meritorious academic achievement

    * Recognized integrity and commitment to excellence

    To be eligible for consideration for induction into the Mercyhurst University Service Honor Society, a student must:

    * Be a full-time undergraduate student

    * Be a senior who has been certified to graduate in the current calendar year

    * Have a GPA of 2.75 or higher by the beginning of the spring semester of the induction year

    * Be recommended for induction through the completion of an official nomination form (students can be nominated by others or may nominate themselves)

    * Complete and return by the designated deadline all materials requested by the Service Honor Society Selection Committee

    Recommendations for induction will be made by the Service Honor Society Selection Committee to the President of the University, who will approve the final induction list. Only a limited number of graduating seniors will be inducted each year. Induction recommendations will be based on the quantity and quality of a student's record of service, the scope of the service activities relative to the student's overall profile, the range of service activities, and the resonance of the student's commitment to service with the Mission of Mercyhurst University and the service tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. 

    Graduating Seniors who are inducted into the Mercyhurst University Service Honor Society will wear the green Mercyhurst University Service Honor Cord at Commencement. Inductees will be honored during late Spring Semester.
